News and Notes
The most important part of
Pt.Sharadchandra Arolkar's concert was his exquisitely
precise presentation of Tappa and Khyalnama; the
influence of the typically Gwalior-style of Tappa-singing
was evident in his Khyals in Yaman and Basant
– Kedar too. The Agra veteran Ustad Latafat Hussein,
with his loud and resonant voice not only reminded
one the great Faiyaz Khan, but also revealed his
own melodic and rhythmic creative urge in his
Maligaura, Barva, and Bhairavi thumaris.
On the evening of the final day, there was a small
function which was chaired by the vice-chancellor,
Prin T.K Tope. On this occasion Dr.B.C.Deva and
Prof.AShok Ranade spoke a few words about the
workshop Shri P.L Deshpande, the originator of
the idea of the Khyal-workshop, the vice-Chairman
of the Sangeet Natak Akaemi, and an advisor of
the University Music Center, mentioned that the
Music Center had successfully created a congenial
atmosphere for such venture an further promised
to render whatever assistance needed for such
project that would be taken up by the center in
future.
