The accordion, a WIND INSTRUMENT, produces
sound by means of reeds over which wind is forced by working
a bellows. The instrument was invented (1821) in Germany by
Friedrich Buschmann, who supplied it with right-hand buttons
for producing treble pitches. Left-hand buttons for playing
bass cords were added in 1829. Eventually, a keyboard supplanted
the right-hand buttons, producing the piano accordion. A popular
instrument, the accordion has only a limited place in the
classical repertoire, although several 20th-century composers
have used the instrument in their works. The CONCERTINA is
a type of miniature accordion.
