Instrumental music that is abstract, free
of literary or pictorial associations, is called absolute
music. In contrast with PROGRAM MUSIC it has no titles or
story connotations that cause the listener to involve his
or her imagination beyond an appreciation of the form and
style of the composition or the technical skills of the performers.
Attention is focused on the relationship of themes, the formal
organization of the musical material, and the beauty of the
music itself. Most SYMPHONIES, SONATAS, CONCERTOS, FUGUES,
and CHAMBER MUSIC are absolute music.
