The bass is the lowest part of a musical composition (instrumental
or vocal), the foundation on which the HARMONY, in the traditional
sense, is built. The lowest adult male singing voice is also
called the bass. When referring to a musical instrument, the
term bass indicates either the lowest member of a family,
or, when a contrabass instrument is used, the next lowest,
as in bass CLARINET. The DOUBLE BASS, the lowest instrument
of the VIOLIN family, is sometimes called simply the bass.
The bass clef is the F CLEF on the fourth line of the musical
staff.
