Royalty issues for the immortal song "
Aye mere watan ke logon, zara ankh mein .... " forced
late poet Pradeep's daughter Mitul Pradeep to file a PIL in
the Bombay High Court against Saregama India Ltd on Monday.
Mitul filed a PIL in the HC, requesting the court to direct
the music company to pay the Union government royalty collected
from the patriotic song for the welfare of war widows, disabled
soldiers and army jawans.
The PIL claims that there was an agreement between Pradeep,
Saregama India Ltd and music composer C Ramachandra that the
royalty derived from the soul-stirring song which had the
country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in tears would
go toward the welfare of disabled soldiers, war widows and
orphans.
However, the music company has failed to divulge details
of the royalty it paid to the union government. The PIL pleads
for disclosure of the royalty received by the company and
the actual amount which it has paid to the union government.
Music composer C Ramachandra had composed the music for the
immortal song while melody queen Lata Mangeshkar had rendered
the song free of cost, the PIL reads.
The PIL is scheduled to come for a hearing before acting
chief justice A P Shah and justice S U Kamdar on June 30.
