The Punjabi University Heritage Foundation
(USA) celebrated the fourth Punjabi Folk Music Festival here
today with Vice-Chancellor Swaran Singh Boparai formally inaugurating
the festival by lighting a lamp. Rachhpal Singh Aujla, patron
of the Punjab Heritage Foundation, was the guest of honour.
Boparai said that Punjabi University, through such carnivals,
not only attempts to revive the otherwise eloping traditional
folk music of Punjab but also tries to encourage folk artists
to present their art at international levels. The festival
got off to a start with a shabad by Kamal Diwana and Haryanvi
dance got big applause from the audience. Nakaliya Party,
Kavishri, Jhumar, Indua, Bhangra, Malwai Gidha were some of
the performing arts which were widely appreciated.
Famous Dhadi Idu Shariff, Des Raj Lachakani, Chiragdin Tibba
and Kulwant and party performed during the festival. Renowned
Sufi singer Sabarkoti also performed in the evening at the
newly inaugurated Kala Bhawan. Dr Rajinder Singh Gill, coordinator
of the festival, while proposing vote of thanks, gave a detailed
information about the need for organising such a festival.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Swaran Singh Boparai inaugurated
the Kala Bhawan, which would house the four departments of
performing arts, music, dance, fine arts and theatre and television.
Rachhpal Singh Aujla , patron of the Punjab Heritage Foundation,
inaugurated the Charlotte Aujla Auditorium.
Inter-zonal youth fest kicks off
The three-day Inter-zonal Youth Festival of Punjabi University
got off to a grand start at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall in
which student artists would be participating in 33 different
performing arts. The festival was inaugurated by University
Vice-Chancellor Swaran Singh Boparai. Noted Pakistani folk
language festival coordinator Shafiq Bhatt, while addressing
the audience, expressed his pleasure over the improvement
in relations between India and Pakistan.
