Rahman delights, Isha wins hearts

Panaji Nov 29: The 35th International Film festival of India got underway with a bang with acclaimed musician, Mr A R Rahman and his troupe performing songs from Mr Subhash Ghai’s forthcoming film Kisna. It was the music premiere of the film, which was heard by the audience for the first time at the opening ceremony of IFFI.

Mr Rahman, who made a dash from London was accompanied by noted percussionist, Mr Sivamani on stage. Before making a public appearance, Mr Subhash Ghai in a voice-over made a brief introduction of the film which is set during the British rule in India.

Of the two songs that Mr Rahman performed on stage, one was in English sung by Ms Sunitha Sarthi, who seemed to be quite capable of giving Ms Celine Dion a run for her money. The second song was performed by renowned singer, Mr Udit Narayan and a newcomer, Ms Madhushree. The lyrics for the song are penned by Mr Javed Akhtar.

Unfortunately, the Rahman extravaganza didn’t last long and that was a disappointment because music lovers were certainly eager to hear more of the maestro.

But what followed next stole the limelight. Showman, Mr Subhash Ghai made an appearance and after thanking Mr Rahman and his troupe, he introduced Ms Isha Sharvani, the leading lady from Kisna. She performed a mind-boggling rope dance to the tune of the title track of the film Kisna, composed by Mr Ismail Darbar. With her amazing grace and flexibility Ms Isha won applauds for her splendid dance performance. She also performed another ballet like dance with Mr Rajesh Ravindran which was choreographed by her mother.

The finale was the screening of Vanity Fair, Ms Mira Nair’s latest offering based on William Makepeace Thackeray’s classic novel. Earlier this year, the film was also screened at the Venice Film festival.

Ms Nair paid compliments to Goa and the people here and said that she usually takes a break and comes here after completing a film. She also took a dig at the censor board for saying that it should be banned.
