Anoushka strikes a chord tonight

Anoushka Shankar is in Mumbai, especially to perform for her Grammy nominated album- Rise. She talks to PHILIP VARGHESE about music and more...

Anoushka Shankar is synonymous with ‘giggly schoolgirl,’ for every sentence you hear from her opens with a warm giggle before the maturity of the 23-year-old songstress comes shining through.

Anoushka will bring the evening alive with the latest compositions from her Grammy nominated album - ‘Rise’ tonight at the Tata Theatre, NCPA at 8 pm.

MIDIval Punditz, the first Indian electronical band to hit the international scene, will be supporting her panache with their unique and expansive artistic vision, which marries the soulful elegance of South Asia’s extraordinarily rich traditional and classical music heritage with the exuberance and limitless potential of modern Western electronic music.

The sponsors Black & White has a distinct niche in the market with its ‘Unbelong’ positioning, which brings out the essence of the brand. In the past the brand has brought globally renowned artists such as the world famous contemporary jazz band, Spyro Gyra as well as introduced Indians to the unique and incomparable concept of ‘Comedy Clubs’. This year it has identified an ‘Unbelong’ experience in the form of Anoushka Shankar’s performance. When asked whether more and more Indians are neglecting Indian music and are interested in learning western instruments and music, she said, “I don’t think so. I can see that scores of music students in this country are interested in classical music first. There is a huge demand for our music in the West.”
