Sarod players Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash will now use Khan as their last name...

Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali have dropped their last name, Bangash, and have gone back to their father's surname, Khan. The musical duo say that they've used Bangash for the past 15 years.

"We've always been referred to as Khan and not Bangash by friends. We have Khan on our educational certificates. When we started playing the sarod professionally, our mom (Subhalakshmi) thought besides being our father's sons, we should also have our own identities,"says Amaan.

Younger brother Ayaan adds, "Our music is from the Bangash gharana. We are the fifth generation. Our forefathers, till the third generation, used Bangash. But my dad didn't. So our mom wanted us to relive the past glory."

But there's more. The duo admit there's also an astrological reason to this change. "A lot of thought went behind this change. And why not? Being a Khan is 'in' anyway,"says Ayaan, tongue-in-cheek.

The duo are in town to attend Ayaan's friend Bharat Sahni's wedding to Riddhima and also to promote their album Reincarnation's second music video that has been shot entirely in Goa.
