Dr. Mangalampally Balamuralikrishna

Dr. Mangalampally Balamuralikrishna, a musical legend of the present times was born in Andhra Pradesh in 1930, and gave his first concert when he was barely 8 years old. His Guru, Parupally Sri Ramakrishnayya Pantulu was the disciple of Sri Dakshinamoorthy Shastri. By the age of 16, he had published a book of his own compositions in all the 72 Melakartha Ragas, with each piece serving as a perfect vehicle to highlight the peculiarities of the raga in which it was composed.

Not content with expressing his genius through the ragas commonly in use, he went on to create new ragas of his own. The most popular of these are Sarvashree (containing only three notes), Mahathi, Manorama, Sushama and Moohanangi. In his compositions, the melody is ingeniously interwoven with the lyrics making most of them musical as well as literary masterpieces. Recognition and acclaim follow Dr. Balamuralikrishna wherever he goes. Winner of several awards including the Padmashri and the Padma Vibhooshan, he has been honoured with doctorates from 5 Universities.
