A redeeming trait in Lalgudi is, he hardly
ever feels the need to call it a day. He emphasizes that he
is an eternal student keeping abreast of all that is happening
in the form of evolution and growing dimensions. He believes
that the only permanent factor in any avenue of life is change,
and it is essential to accept that which is inevitable. His
art that at times is contemplative and expressive and at other
times imbued with joy and cheer, has made him rule the stage
like a true champion. In recent years, Lalgudi’s creative
genius has found expression in the genre of dance. “
Jaya Jaya Devi” a dance opera for which he composed
the lyrics and music was a resounding success.
His role as
a guru is marked with sincerity of purpose as he cajoles,
coaxes, encourages and whenever necessary enforces strict
discipline on each of his disciples to get the best out of
him. His magnanimity in sharing his exhaustive knowledge with
other musicians is a wonderful human quality. His committed
professionalism is such, that although his brilliant career
ha spanned generations, yet his mindset maintains contemporary
relevance.
In an era when the younger generation is slated to take over,
the musicianship of Lalgudi has undoubtedly enables him to
join the ranks of the truly great potentates of Carnatic Music.
Lalgudi Jayaraman is an ashtavadhani who brings to mind the
popular adage, “The lives of great men remind us now
to make our live sublime”.
