Awards & Titles

Titles and honours have come on his way. The most cherished being the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Pettam, Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetam, Sri Ahobila Mutt and Sri Pillayarpatti Temple.

Gopalnath has the distinction of being the first Carnatic Musician to be invited to perform in the BBC promenade concert in 1994, in The Royal Albert Hall at London. The Asian Music Circuit, U.K, sponsored his recital. Among is other distinctions are:

Saxophone Chakravarthy, Saxophone Samrat, Ganakala Shree, Nadopasana Brahma, Sunada Prakashika, Nada Kalarathna, Nada Kalanidhi, Sangeetha Vadya Rathna, Sangeetha Rathna, Karnataka Kalashree in 1996, Vocational Excellency Award form the Rotary of Madras, Tamil Nadu State Award “ Kalaimamani” and Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1998.

Gopalnath has extensively toured abroad on invitations. He has participated in the Jazz Festival in Prague, Berlin Jazz Festival, International Cervantino Festival in Mexico, Music Halle Festival, Paris, Concerts in Switzerland, United Kingdom, U.S.A., Canada, Bahrain, Australia, Kuwait, Quatar, Muscat, Germany, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore.

He has cut many LP’s and recorded a number of cassettes and CD’s. He has played for a Fusion CD “ Southern Brothers” for Global Integration, with Mr. James Newton, a famous Jazz player from the U.S.A. Identifying his talents, noted film director K Balachandar used his services in his Tamil Film “Duet”, which put Gopalnath on a new pedestal.

A Tamil Weekly of Madras featured him on a cover page story, heading him as “Isai Vizha Nayakan” (Hero of the Music Festival). The Music Academy chose him for the “Best Instrumentalist of the season”. Both rare distinctions indeed!
