Kanjira V.Nagarajan

I was born on the 30th July 1930. I am the son of Violin Vidwan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri. Papa K.S.Venkatramiah. I had my early training from the illustrious Mridangam Vidwan Tanjore Sri Vaidyanatha Iyer for a few years and then continued my training from the great Mridangam Vidwan "Sangeetha Kalanidhi" Palghat Sri.T.S.Mani Iyer for several years both in Mridangam and Kanjira. Sri Palghat T.S.Mani Iyer taught the traditional methods and techniques of Kanjira playing to me. I gave my first concert at Trichy with Sangeetha Kalanidhis M/s. Alathoor Brothers in the year 1950. I have ac- companied a galaxy of maestros of the past and provide Kanjira accompaniment to artistes of great merit today, both vocal and instrumental.

I had the unique opportunity to introduce the instrument "Kanjira" to the American audience when I joined the faculty at the Wesleyan University as a Visiting Professor in the year 1967. Again in the year 1974 we had the privilege of teaching American Students at Berkeley, California for one year. I had trained a number of American "Full Bright" Scholarship students.

I have toured many countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Middle East, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the U.S.A., Canada, the U.K., Japan and participated in the "Festival of India" conducted in the Soviet Union.

I have number of cassettes and long play records to my credit, accompanying great maestros both vocal and instrumental. I have been performing in all the eminent Sabhas in this country for more than 40 years now.

I have been honoured with several titles namely:

1) Asthana Vidwan of Sri Sankara Mutt by His Holiness Sri Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Mutt.

2) Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

3) Sangeetha Mani from His Holiness Sri Haridoss Giri.

4) Nadakkanal from Nadakkanal Trust.

5) Mridangam Maestro Sri Palani Subramania Pillai Award (Laya Kala Nipuna) from Percussive Arts Centre, Bangalore.
