Popularly known as DEBU, Devabrata Chaudhaari
is one of India's outstanding musicians of the day. He received
his early training from late Panchu Gopal Dutta and later
from the seniormost traditional exponent of sitar, Ustaad
Mushtaq Ali Khan of Senia Gharana, a traditional school of
Indian music. Special feature of this senior gharana is that
it represents an uninterrupted lineage of sitar players for
eight generations. This is the only gharana in indian music
which is still using 17 frets in the sitar.
Pandit chaudhari's recitals are marked by a rare sense of
aesthetic grace and a sense of unexcelled sweetness. His latest
contribution to Indian music is his creation of 7 In dian
ragas, namely, RAGA BISWESWARI, PALAS SARANG, ANURANJANI,
ASHIQUI LALIT, SWANANDESWARI, KALYANI BILAWAL and SHIVAMANJARI.
To promote Indian classical music Debu Chaudhari Has visted
more than a hundred universities around the world and performed
in various international music festivals. He has a number
of record albums to his credit in India, US, and the UK, and
has also performed music for Indian and International television.
He is ranked among the top-grade artists of all india radio
and television. A member of the advisory committee of many
cultural bodies and recipient of many honors, professor chaudhari
is the dean of the faculty of music and fine arts and head
of the deptt. of music, Delhi University. He was involved
recently as an advisor to the project in promoting Indian
music in the schools of Leicester in England. He has also
written a book, "Sitar and its Techniques" which
is very popular.
