Raga Today - BEGADA

A vakra shadava sampoorna janya raga derived from the 29th mela Dhirasankarabharanam. Only arohana is vakra and Ni is varjya in arohana. In this upanga raga the svaras figuring are Shadja^ Chatusruti Ri^ Antara Ga^ Sudha Ma^ Pa^ Chatusruti Dha^ and Kakali Ni. The elongated Ma is a special feature of this raga and in the phrase dpm;; the Ma is sharpened and this is called the Begade Ma (27/20). In the phrase p;dn;dp and rn;dp^ the Ni is flattened which brings out the melodic individuality of the raga. A gamaka pradhana raga wherein Ma^ Dha and Ni are chaya svaras. Afternoon time is the best time suitable for singing this raga. A tristhayi raga in which Ma and Pa are nyasa svaras. An auspicious raga which is sometimes sung at the beginning of the concerts. In Tamil it is known as Vegadai. Patnam Subramonia Iyer was an expert in singing the raga by which he got the name Begade Subraomonia Iyer.
