Raga Today - BILAHARI

This is an audava sampoorna raga derived from the 29th mela Dhirasankarabharanam. This is also known as Balahari and Bilaahari. Ma and Ni are varjya in the arohana. This is an ekanya svara bhashanga raga and kaishiki Ni^ is the bhashanga svara that occurs in the svara phrase pdndppdnpdp. Ri^ Ni and Dha are the raga chaya svaras while Pa and Ri are nyasa svaras^ snp is a visesha sanchara. Vira rasa pradhana for those who are melancholic^ and depressed. A tristhayi raga that is well distributed. The appropriate time for singing this raga is in the morning. Janta swaras^ Dattu svara prayogas add to the melodic beauty of the raga. The closely similar Deshakshi raga brings out its individually in the tristhayi sancharas especially gggggr srgrs. The reverse arohana and avarohana of Bilahari gives the raga Garudadhwani. Thygaraja is believed to have brought to life a dead man singing ‘na jeevadhara’ in this raga.
