Raga Today - KURINJI

A dhaivatandya raga derived from the 29th mela Sankarabharanam. The notes taken by the raga besides Sa and Pa are Chatusruti Ri^ Antara^ Ga^ Sudha Ma^ Chatusruti Dha and kaishiki Ni. The Ni figuring in this raga is tivrakakali Ni of frequency 243/128 in the phrase snNS. In this upanga raga all the notes are rendered with gamaka. Ga^ Pa and Ni are jiva svaras and nyasa svaras. Duw to the limitation in its svara sancharas this is sun in madhyama sruti only. This auspicious raga reveals bhakthi rasa and Shines well in vilambita laya. Kurinji pan is found in Tamil music and this is a favourite tune found in folk tunes. The folk music kuram is in this raga. Kurinji is believed to be adopted into carnatic music from folk music. According to Dikshitar school this is a sampoorna raga with vakra sancharas with arohana and avarohana s r g m g m p d n s - s n p n d d p m g r s. This raga is mentioned in Sangitaratnakara.
