The 8th melakartha 2nd mela in the
2nd chakra^ Netra’. ‘ Netra- Sri’
is the mnemonic name. The mnemonic phrase is sa ra ga
ma pa dha na. For convenience in calculating the melakartha
number the raga is named Hanumathodi. A major melakartha
claiming a large number of janya ragas. A major melakartha
number the raga is named Haumathodi. A major melakartha
claiming a large number of janya ragas. A murchanakaraka
mela. Ri^ Ga^ Ma ^ Dha and Ni taken as Adhara Shadja
gives rise to the following melas. Kalyani^ Harikamhoji.
Natabhairavi^ Sankarabharanam and Kharaharapriya respectively.
Thodi is the Rishabha murcha of the ancient Shadjagrama.
This is also called Sudha Todi. The Ramayana gita ‘Arare
Dasarath raja’ in the dhruva is composed in this
mela. Todi is a mela with symmetrical arohna and avarohana.
The tetrachords of this raga are being seperated by
an inerval of a major tone. Ga ^ Ma and Dha are the
raga chaya svaras. Ma^ Pa^ Occurs as amsa svaras whereas
Ga^ Ma^Pa^ Dha and Ni are nyasa svaras. Janta svara^
dattu svara prayogas occur in this raga . Pa^ Sa^ varjya
prayogas add beauty to the raga dnsD and rsD are visesha
prayogas. Thodi is a tristhayi and sarvasvara gamaka
varika rakti raga. All typed of compostions figure in
this raga. Sarvakalika mela. Nattakokilam of Tamil music
is similar to Todi. Hindusthani Thodi is the Sudhapantuvarali
of carnatic music. Todi Sitaramayya had sung this raga
continuosly for 8 days. Hanumatodi is a mela that gives
rise to nearly 100 janya ragas. Venkitamakhi has named
it as Jiva todi. Thodi evokes karuna easa and bhakti
rasa.
