This is the 39th mela. The prefix
‘Jhala’ is added to the raga name in order
to suit the katapayadi formula. Varali is the 3rd mela
in the 7th chakra. ‘Rishi-Go’ is the mnemonic.
The mnemonic phrase is sa ra ga mi pa dha nu. This is
a vivadi mela talking Sa^ Sudha RI^ Sudha Ga^ Prati
Ma^ Pa^ Sudha Dha and Kakali Ni.Vivadi dosha of the
raga is avoided by singing in a vakra sampoorna arohana.
This is one of the Ghana ragas and 4th in the series.
A gamaka pradhana raga^ Ga and Ma are the raga chaya
svaras^ Ga and Ma are rendered with gamaka. Ga in the
raga is sudha Ga which is sung in the place of Chatusruti
Ri. Varali Ma is of higher frequency than Prati Ma and
hence is called so. This raga in old times was known
as Varati. This is sung in postpallavi part of the concert
expecially in ragamalika.
A special feature of Varali is that in most cases it
is not taught directly to the student. There is a belief
that teaching of Varali direct to a student will strain
the relations of guru shishya. The raga is learnt by
listening directly or by self learning. |
